The Academy of American Poets supports American poets at all stages of their careers by administering seven major awards—from a first-book prize to a lifetime-achievement award—and nearly two hundred College Prizes at schools across the country. We also foster the appreciation of contemporary poetry through the production of, which reaches tens of millions of visitors each year; National Poetry Month (April), the largest literary celebration in the world; Poets Forum, a weekend-long conference in New York City featuring the poets who serve on our honorary Board of Chancellors; Poem-a-Day, through which we publish 260 new poems by contemporary poets and distribute them daily through email and social media to hundreds of thousands of readers; a Summer Reading Series, featuring poets presenting new work in iconic New York City locations; and American Poets, our biannual literary magazine for members.

Poets Emergency Fund

The Academy of American Poets established a Poets Emergency Fund in 1985. The modest fund exists to help provide relief to an American poet of demonstrated ability who is experiencing a temporary and urgent financial crisis. Applications to the fund are not accepted.
