Rebecca Givens Rolland

Rebecca Givens Rolland is the author of three poetry collections, including The Wreck of Birds (Bauhan Publishing, 2012), winner of the May Sarton New Hampshire Prize. She teaches at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and works as a speech-language pathologist. She lives in Boston, Massachussetts.

Late evening, metals bolstering our
houses finish acting like anything
but themselves. Bauxite, copper, rods

we bored into under aegis of trees:
forgetting injected fluid, cracks in
unwitting steel. Years later, a landmine

excavates us—crack-seal veins
bubbling up, flaring out—formations
pressurized from inside
