Maria White Lowell

Maria White Lowell, born on July 8, 1821, in Watertown, Massachusetts, was an American poet, an ardent abolitionist, and a women’s rights activist. She died on October 27, 1853. In the months following her death, her husband James Russell Lowell prepared for the publication of The Poems of Maria Lowell (The Riverside Press, 1855). Mrs. Lowell would come to influence poets such as Emily Dickinson and Amy Lowell
