Dr. William Kolodney founded the 92nd Street Y Poetry Center “to give poetry ‘a local habitation and a name,’ to make it belong, to give it a body, to humanize it.” The Poetry Center has grown to include a reading series of about thirty events each year, most of which are held in 92Y’s Kaufmann Concert Hall. The Poetry Center is also home to the lecture series Books and Bagels and the annual Discovery/Boston Review poetry contest. One of the oldest and most revered reading series in the country, the Poetry Center’s reading series has included such major modern poets as W. H. Auden, T. S. Eliot, Robert Frost, Langston Hughes, Marianne Moore, Wallace Stevens, and Dylan Thomas, among many others.
