The Luzumiyat of Abu’l-Ala, CVIII

translated from the Arabic by Ameen Rihani

Why not to-day, O Heaven-cradled seers?
The highway’s strewn with dead, the lepers weep,
If ye but knew,—if ye but saw their tears!
