When My Mother Rages

by Hannah Riccardi

My father and I play
chess, but he can never
remember how the pawn

is supposed to move. His pieces
charge down the black and white
corridors in diagonals

and straight shots, but he believes
the most important piece
is the knight

because its bold strides
take the queen as the slamming
door shakes the walls.
