Look How Far You've Come

by Laurie Lamon

I gave you a tree
and you said tree
and then cut and cut
until you were
hoarse with calling
back the rings
back the branches.
I gave you wind
and you thought it
was a box a sheet
something to cart away
all you had burned.
I gave you land
and you dug a pit
a canal you dug stone
from a quarry
and now look
look at the statues
one by one how
they resemble you.
