Poet Laureate

David Romtvedt
Appointed by the Governor Dave Freudenthal in August of 2004, David Romtvedt has received creative writing fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Wyoming Arts Council. His collection A Flower Whose Name I Do Not Know won the National Poetry Series Book Award in 1991. He serves on the Wyoming Arts Council board and teaches at the University of Wyoming.

Wyoming Arts Council
The Council's Literature Program helps support new audiences for literature by sponsoring readings and workshops for the state's writers through its various granting programs. The Tumblewords Program provides grants to libraries, schools, and arts agencies that allows them to bring Wyoming writers into their communities. In Writers in Electronic Residence (WIER), professional writers provide on-line writing workshops to secondary school students.

Wyoming Writers, Inc.
Through annual conferences, monthly newsletters, workshops, activities, and networking, WWI brings its members together to strengthen the writing community.

Wyoming Young Authors
Wyoming Young Authors holds a yearly writing competition and conference for young writers from around the state.

WyoPoets
WyoPoets holds regular poetry contests and publishes chapbooks of poetry. The annual meeting of WyoPoets is held in conjunction with the Wyoming Writers, Inc. Conference the first weekend in June. Readings series, conferences, & literary festivals

Jackson Hole Writers Conference
This yearly conference is composed of three basic elements: speeches and panel discussions by some of the most successful writers, editors and agents in the business; workshops led by working writers featuring inside advice on the craft of writing fiction, creative nonfiction, and screenplays; and evaluation of participants manuscripts.

Muddy Waters Coffee House Open Mic Night

Literary journals & small presses

High Plains Press
A small press which specializes in books on Wyoming and poetry of the American West. Their poetry series features notable poets writing about the West including titles by Jane Candia Coleman, Laurie Wagner Buyer, Mary Lou Sanelli and Robert Roripaugh.

Owen Wister Review

University of Wyoming
The University of Wyoming offers a MA degree with a concentration in Creative Writing. The Creative Writing department maintains a website, Poetry Wyoming, that provides information about poetry events in the state.

Ucross Foundation
It is the mission of the Ucross Foundation to foster fresh and innovative thinking in the visual arts, literature, and music by providing residencies, work space and uninterrupted time to individual artists, writers, and composers. Situated on a 20,000-acre working cattle ranch, the Ucross Foundation's unique geographic location introduces individuals to the land, people and ethos of the northern High Plains and Rocky Mountain region. There are two residency sessions annually. There is no fee for a residency.

Jentel Artist Residency Program
Jentel Artist Residency Program lies in the Lower Piney Creek Valley with spectacular views over scoria topped hills to the majestic Big Horn Mountains. It provides space where artists and writers may focus on creating. Communal spaces are designated for research, recreation, food preparation, and dining. Each resident receives a stipend to help defray living expenses during the program. Any visual artist or writer over 25 currently residing in the United States or any U.S. citizen is eligible.
