Lance Larsen
In 2012, Lance Larsen was named to a five-year term as Utah Poet Laureate. He is the author of four collection of poems: Genius Loci, Backyard Alchemy, In All Their Animal Brilliance, and Erasable Walls. He holds a PhD from the University of Houston.

Literary Organizations & Centers

League of Utah Writers
The League of Utah Writers is a non-profit organization for writers of all genres. Members meet in local chapters around the state to write, read, and discuss their work. The organization also hosts an annual workshop each spring.

Redrock Writers Guild
A non-profit organization based in Southern Utah, the Redrock Writers Guild promotes poetry through a reading series, an annual writing seminar, and the Chaparral Poetry Contest.

Salt Lake City Arts Council
Supports poetry by giving grants and co-sponsoring a reading series.

Utah Arts Council
Utah Arts Council has outreach services (including financial assistance) to schools, local arts councils and organizations, community centers, performing groups and individual artists.

Utah State Poetry Society
Dedicated to the creation and appreciation of poetry, the Utah State Poetry Society encourages members in each step of the writing process. Members are encouraged to read and listen to the great poetry of our time and our heritage.

Utah Humanities Council
Since its establishment in 1975 as an independent nonprofit agency, UHC and its programs have reached every corner of the state, involving thousands of people as planners, participants, and audiences. UHC sponsors programs designed to enrich public discussion and encourage citizen involvement. It provides grants and technical assistance to nonprofit organizations and a limited number of individual grants to scholars; offers speakers for public forums, maintains a circulating library, presents an annual book festival, and collaborates on projects and services with other cultural and educational leaders in the state.

An online resource for writers, including a listing of local conferences and workshops, local authors, aspiring authors, and writing organizations.

Writing Programs & Colonies

University of Utah
Candidates for the M.F.A. must spend at least three semesters in residence and must complete all work for the degree within five consecutive calendar years. Graduate students comprise the editorial staff of Quarterly West and work on Western Humanities Review. The University also co-sponsors Guest Writers, a free reading series.

Utah State University
The undergraduate creative writing program at Utah State University publishes the Scribendi journal of student writing, and offers the Scribendi Creative Writing Contest. The graduate specialization in Literature & Writing leads to an MA or MS degree in English and is designed for students interested in exploring connections among the fields of literary criticism, composition and rhetoric, and creative writing. Students create a program of study that fits their interests and needs, while benefiting from a broad mix of coursework from the curriculum.

Utah Valley University
The UVU English & Literature department offers a wide variety of classes in writing, literature, and critical theory, and offers a minor in Creative Writing. Two student-run journals, Touchstone and Warp and Weave, are produced through the department, which also features a guest reading series.

Brigham Young University
Students in the master’s program learn the techniques and habits used by publishing writers. The program includes both practical (workshopping) classes and a class which explores theoretical bases for creative writing. The faculty members are widely published; their work ranges from poetry and creative nonfiction to novels.

Readings Series, Conferences, & Literary Festivals

Fritz's night of Beer and Poetry
An open mic poetry night every second and fourth Tuesday of the month in Salt Lake City. Sponsored by Local Muse, Monks House of Jazz, 19 E 200 S.

Great Salt Lake Book Festival
The Utah Humanities Council's Great Salt Lake Book Festival is a free, three-day event bringing together authors of every genre to speak to the public about their work. Children's events include a poetry slam for teens.

Guest Writers Reading Series
Readings are free and open to the public and followed by a reception for the writers. Sponsored by Salt Lake City Arts Council and the University of Utah.

Western Legends Round Up
The celebration offers a roster of cowboy poets, musicians and storytellers to share their talents and interpretations of the "Old West."

Writers at Work
A week-long conference that celebrates the vibrant literary community in the state, and provides an opportunity for aspiring writers to meet and learn from established professionals in the literary and publishing worlds.

Quarterly West
Quarterly West publishes two issues a year, and is edited by graduate students from the University of Utah.

Western Humanities Review
The University of Utah's Department of English has sponsored Western Humanities Review for over 60 years.

Sugar House Review
Sugar House Review is an independent, semiannual poetry journal based out of Salt Lake City, Utah. The first issue premiered in the fall of 2009.

Touchstones
Touchstones is a magazine of the poetry, prose, art & photography of Utah Valley University students. It is published twice a year, in fall and spring semesters. The first issue was published in the fall of 1997.

On Angels Magazine
OnAngels Magazine is dedicated to promoting creative talent by showcasing artistic, modern interpretations, stories, and poetry celebrating angels and the angelic world.

University of Utah Press
The University of Utah Press is an agency of the J. Willard Marriott Library of the University of Utah. In accordance with the mission of the University, the Press publishes and disseminates scholarly books in selected fields, as well as other printed and recorded materials of significance to Utah, the region, the country, and the world.

Brushfire Press
Brushfire Press is an independent publisher located in Northern Utah. It seeks out local writers, left out by previous publishing options; works with educators, schools, and community organizations to develop new writers; and searches for minority writers whose voices have been underrepresented. Brushfire Press is an artist-run company.
