Marjory Wentworth
Born in Lynn, Massachusetts Marjory Wentworth grew up in nearby Swanpscott, a seaside community north of Boston. She was educated at Mt. Holyoke College, Oxford University, and New York University. Her poems have appeared in numerous books and magazines, including Point, Skirt and Brightleaf magazine. Most recently, her poems have been published with Mary Edna Fraser's art in a book of poetry and monotype prints called What the Water Gives Me. Ms. Wentworth teaches poetry in "Expressions of Healing"&an arts and healing program for cancer patients and their families at Roper Medical Center. She also teaches creative writing at the Charleston County School of Arts and currently resides in Mt. Pleasant.

Poet and essayist Sherod Santos was born in Greenville, South Carolina. He is the author of five books of poetry including The Pilot Star Elegies, which won the Theodore Roethke Poetry Prize.

The Emrys Foundation The Emrys Foundation encourages women and minorities in the arts, including literary and visual arts, music, dance, theater and film. Founded in 1983, Emrys has sponsored music competitions and presented concerts, art exhibitions, conferences, creative writing awards, poetry workshops, readings, and lectures.
Hub City Writers Project The Hub City Writers Project of Spartanburg, South Carolina, is a non-profit independent press and literary arts organization which publishes place-based books and sponsors readings, writing seminars, and contests.
Lowcountry Initiative for the Literary Arts LILA's mission is to nurture and promote the literary arts in South Carolina. It is dedicated to developing programs that enrich the area's literary communities and to diversifying the opportunities open to students, writers, and readers. It approaches this goal by connecting, educating, and promoting writers and readers at every stage of development, from the novice to the professional.
The Poetry Society of South Carolina Supporting the reading, writing, study, and enjoyment of poetry, the Poetry Society of South Carolina is a membership organization offering readings by nationally known poets, an annual Yearbook of winning poems, contests, and more. The organization is also responsible for the Skylark Prize, a competition for SC high school students.
South Carolina Arts Commission Works to develop a thriving arts environment, which is essential to quality of life, education, and economic vitality for all South Carolinians. Its website lists an arts events calendar.
South Carolina Center for the Book The South Carolina Center for the Book is the South Carolina Affiliate of the Library of Congress Center for the Book and is a cooperative project of the South Carolina State Library, the University of South Carolina School of Library and Information Science, and the Humanities Council SC. The Center celebrates South Carolina's rich literary heritage and brings public attention to the importance of books, writers and reading.
South Carolina Writers Workshop A literary arts organization serving both new and established writers, offering writers opportunities to improve their writing, network with others, and gain practical "How To" information about getting published.
Wits End Poetry Wits End Poetry brings poets from across the country to the Upstate, organizes live readings and events across the state, provides resources to up-and-coming writers through its online newsletter, Witsendpoetry.com, and promotes community building among writers both in the Upstate and across the South East.

University of South Carolina The Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing is
for students who wish to pursue a career in creative writing and the
teaching of creative writing. Students may choose among four options within the program: fiction, poetry, dramatic writing, or writing for the media.
Converse College The MFA in Creative Writing is a two-year low residency program designed for serious, independent writers seeking advanced instruction in fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction through a non-traditional course of graduate study. The program’s emphasis on the mastery and understanding of writing skills and contemporary literature and craft through the master-writer and apprentice mentoring relationship, offers students a stimulating and individually tailored curriculum of courses and projects.

South Carolina Book Festival An annual, weekend-long festival, featuring well-known authors, booksellers and exhibitors, and readers, coming together for two days of readings, signings, and serious book shopping--free of charge.
SlamCharlotte SlamCharlotte is a nationally recognized poetry slam located in Charlotte, NC. Formerly Queen City Soul Slam, the slam started at the African-American Cultural Center in 2003. Through a desire for continued growth, the partnership between SlamCharlotte and the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center's Education Institute was formed. SlamCharlotte's current slammaster is the 13th ranked individual slam poet in the world. SlamCharlotte strives to promote poetic growth, performance enhancement, and increased camaraderie between poets and the community through a monthly slam competition.
Emry's Reading Room Every fourth Monday, Emrys' Reading Room series features regional writers who are published and read nationally. Poets read from their work and answer audience questions. The Reading Room also highlights emerging writers, each spring.
Book Your Lunch Book Your Lunch brings authors and readers together in Greenville, NC. The $25 luncheon tickets must be purchased in advance. The featured author reads from their work (or gives a 20-minute talk), followed by a Q&A session and a lunch provided by Table 301. An onsite book-signing session with the author follows. |

Illuminations An international literary magazine run out of Columbia College.
The South Carolina Review Since 1968, The South Carolina Review has published fiction, poetry, interviews, unpublished letters and manuscripts, essays, and reviews from well-known and aspiring scholars and writers. They have also published special issues, such as the Virginia Woolf International, numerous fictions compilations, and issues focusing on the works of Robert Frost, Mary Gordon, Walker Percy, and James Dickey.
University of South Carolina Press Established in 1944, it is one of the oldest publishing houses in the South and among the largest in the Southeast. The series editor is Richard Howard.
Yemassee The literary journal of University of South Carolina, publishes poetry, short fiction, creative nonfiction, one-act plays, essays and interviews in two issues each year. It is run by graduate student writers and editors. |
