John Berryman

John Berryman
MacAlester, Oklahoma was the birthplace of poet John Berryman. He gained widespread recognition with the publication of the highly innovative Dream Songs, which won a Pulitzer Prize. In 1972, he died tragically by throwing himself off a bridge.

Poet Ai teaches at Oklahoma State University and lives in Stillwater. Her books include Vice, which won the National Book Award for Poetry.

Joy Harjo

Joy Harjo
Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Joy Harjo’s volumes of poetry include In Mad Love and War, which received an American Book Award and the Delmore Schwartz Memorial Award. Also a performative poet, she plays saxophone with her band, Poetic Justice.

Individual Artists of Oklahoma
Individual Artists of Oklahoma is committed to sustaining and encouraging emerging and established artists in all media and thus offers poetry readings and classes. IAO's Poetry Committee encourages and supports poetic experimentation, the development of multi-media and performance poetry, as well as perpetuating poetry within the literary tradition. IAO also fosters a community that links poets and poetry with artists in other genres.

Norman Arts & Humanities Council
Founded in 1976, the Norman Arts Council (NAC) enriches the Norman community by stimulating its artistic, cultural and economic growth. The NAC provides financial assistance, program opportunities, information and advocacy for the arts and humanities in Norman.

Oklahoma Arts Institute
From offices in Oklahoma City, the Arts Institute administers two educational programs: The Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute, a two-week residential school for teens; and the Oklahoma Fall Arts Institutes, a series of four-day weekend workshops in the arts for adults. The Oklahoma Arts Institute's permanent home is at Quartz Mountain Arts and Conference Center. Quartz Mountain is a state-run resort park located twenty miles north of Altus in southwestern Oklahoma.

Oklahoma Center for the Book
The Oklahoma Center for the Book (OCB) is a state affiliate of the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, and is organized to focus attention on the vital role of books and reading in our lives. The Center promotes the past, current, and future works of Oklahoma authors; promotes the literary heritage of the state; and encourages reading for pleasure by Oklahomans of all ages. OCB sponsors the annual Oklahoma Book Awards.

The Poetry Society of Oklahoma
PSO holds annual contests for its members, culminating in the Awards Banquet at the March meeting, and they sponsor annual youth contests for students from all over the state. Through the efforts of long-time member Elizabeth Totten of Ponca City, the twenty-fifth Legislature of Oklahoma adopted October 15 as Poetry Day in Oklahoma, which PSO celebrates every year.

Writing programs & colonies

Oklahoma State University in Stillwater
The M.A. and Ph.D. programs in creative writing focus on the vital relationship between the literary arts of fictional, poetic, and dramatic composition and the larger literary tradition of the English language. Students select coursework to balance their writing courses and literary study. Concentrations in poetry writing, fiction writing, and script writing are available, as are teaching assistantships.

University of Oklahoma in Norman
The English Department at the University of Oklahoma offers nationally recognized programs in cultural studies, Native American Studies, and Composition, Rhetoric, and Literacy.

Oklahoma Writers Federation, Inc.
OWFI is a multi-genre writers' organization with 27 affiliate groups from Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas and Kansas, plus more than a hundred members-at-large. With a total of over 600 members, they hold one of the oldest and most respected writers' conferences in the Midwest.

ByLine Press
Based in Edmond, ByLine conducts a poetry chapbook competition annually.

Cimarron Review
Since 1967, Cimarron Review has published authors such as Nobel Prize winner Jose Saramago, Rick Moody, Robert Olen Butler, Jonathan Ames, Mark Doty, Diane Wakoski, Tess Gallagher, Richard Shelton, Mark Halliday, Jerome Rothenberg, Nin Andrews, and many others. Cimarron Review is published by the Oklahoma State University in Stillwater.

Nimrod
Founded at the University of Tulsa in 1956, Nimrod (an international journal of poetry and prose) has been active in the discovery and publication of new writers for more than 40 years. The journal also sponsors a number of literary awards.

World Literature Today
World Literature Today, based at the University of Oklahoma, has interviews and original poetry from around the globe, lively essays on writers and regional trends, authors on books that changed their lives, and more.
