Maya Angelou, an author, poet, producer, playwright, and civil rights activist, was born in St. Louis. She is best known for her autobiographies, including I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which was nominated for the National Book Award.

Carl Phillips
Carl Phillips' many awards include the Theodore Roethke Memorial Foundation Poetry Prize and the Thom Gunn Award for Gay Male Poetry. He was elected a chancellor of the Academy in 2006, and is a Professor of English at Washington University in St. Louis. |

2River
Since 1996, 2River has been a site of poetry, art, and theory, quarterly publishing The 2River View and occasionally publishing individual authors in the 2River Chapbook Series. All publications appear online and in print.
BkMk Press Concentrates on full-length collections of poetry, short fiction, and creative essays.
Helicon Nine Editions Helicon Nine Editions publishes new and established poets and fiction writers. The press sponsors the Marianne Moore Poetry Prize, which is open to poets living in the United States. The prize winner receives $1000, publication by Helicon Nine Editions, and participates in a joint reading with the judges.
Missouri Review Founded in 1978. It is published three times a year by the University of Missouri. Each issue contains new fiction, poetry and essays.
Moon City Review Started in 1965 as Type, Moon City Review is published each semester by the Missouri State English Department, and is distributed nationwide.
Natural Bridge A semi-annual literary magazine containing poetry, fiction, essays, and poetry translations published by the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
New Letters: A Magazine of Writing & Art The international quarterly founded in 1934, publishes contemporary writing, interviews, translations, photography and artwork. New Letters on the Air, the radio companion to the journal New Letters, is a half-hour literature program produced in the studios of KCUR-FM on the University of Missouri-Kansas City campus. It is distributed nationally via the public radio satellite system. Every week, the program presents a contemporary author reading from his or her work and talking about the craft of writing and personal inspirations.
Timberline Press Timberline Press was established in 1975 and publishes letterpress books of poetry.
Truman State University Press Truman State University Press publishes 10 to 12 titles per year, primarily
in the areas of early modern studies, regional studies, poetry, and
significant works for the educated general public. It administers the T. S.
Eliot Prize for Poetry, which is an annual award for the best unpublished
book-length collection of poetry in English, in honor of T. S. Eliot's
considerable intellectual and artistic legacy.
University of Missouri Press University of Missouri Press prints more than 60 titles per year in the
areas of American and European history, African American studies, women's
studies, literary criticism, journalism, political science, regional studies

The Center for the Humanities The Center for the Humanities at the University of Missouri-St. Louis is the only center of its kind in the region and in the entire state. The Center for the Humanities has two central objectives: to provide visibility and focus for humanities activities at UMSL and to attract and channel resources for the support of interdisciplinary humanistic inquiry. It presents a poetry and short story reading series.
Missouri Center for the Book Established in 1993 "to bring the words and ideas of books into the thoughts and lives of Missourians." The website contains extensive information on literary journals and organizations, and offers a comprehensive literary history of Missouri.
Missouri State Poetry Society Sponsors poetry contests, publishes a newsletter, and holds a state convention for society members.
St. Louis Poetry Center Monthly meetings held September through May--seven of which are poetry workshops. Poetry reading for winners of annual poetry contest each May.
Writer's Challenge Literary Association Sponsors an annual poetry contest.

Missouri Writers' Guild The Missouri Writers' Guild is the statewide organization for professional writers in all genres. The Guild holds an annual writing contest, an annual writing conference, and has 13 chapters throughout the state, providing regular opportunities to network and learn more about the craft of writing. |

University of Missouri The English Department offers two graduate degrees in Creative Writing, the M.A. and the Ph.D. Both degrees provide candidates with the opportunity to participate in a series of intensive writing workshops, to study closely with resident and visiting faculty writers, and
to pursue a wide range of studies in Literature, Critical and Literary
Theory, Folklore and Oral Tradition, Rhetoric and Composition.
University of Missouri—St. Louis M.F.A. candidates have the opportunity to work on Natural Bridge, a semi-annual literary magazine containing poetry, fiction, essays, and poetry translations, and attend readings sponsored by the English department. The program also awards an annual prize in poetry to an M.F.A. student.
Washington University The Writing Program at Washington University is a unique community of writers, scholars, and critics. The program is designed by writers for writers, and is an integral part of the English Department, closely associated with other graduate programs within the university.
Missouri State University The Missouri State University English Department offers a variety of degree programs in several different areas of study, including the M.A. in English with a focus in Creative Writing. The department sponsors a couple of reading series that are free for students, faculty, and the community to attend. The department's facilities include a computer lab with state-of-the-art software. Moon City Review is a collection of creative works written by students and faculty in the English Department.
University of Missouri—Kansas City The University of Missouri-Kansas City Creative Writing program is home to a combination of literary resources, including internships at New Letters, New Letters on the Air, and BkMk Press; Mark Twain Writers Workshop and New Letters Weekend Writers Conference; several reading series; and accomplished visiting writers and writers-in-residence. |
