Dionisio D. Martínez
Dionisio D. Martínez, born in Havana, Cuba on April 7, 1956. He grew up speaking Spanish and was first raised in Spain and then the United States.
He is the author of Climbing Back (W. W. Norton, 2000), which was selected by Jorie Graham for the 1999 National Poetry Series; Bad Alchemy (1995), which was one of twenty-five titles included in the New York Public Library's 1995 "Books to Remember" list; History as a Second Language (1993), which won the Ohio State University Press/The Journal Award for Poetry; and a chapbook, Dancing at the Chelsea (1992).
His other honors include fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Whiting Foundation.
His poetry has been published in numerous journals and anthologies, including The American Poetry Review, The Best American Poetry (1992 & 1994), Colorado Review, Confrontation, Denver Quarterly, The Georgia Review, Hard Choices: An Iowa Review Reader (1996), In Brief: Short Takes on the Personal (1999), Iowa Review, The Jazz Poetry Anthology, Kenyon Review, Mid-American Review, The New Republic, North American Review, The Norton Anthology of Poetry (1996), Ploughshares, Prairie Schooner, The Prose Poem, Quarterly West, Seneca Review, Solo, Tampa Review, and Verse. His essays and reviews appear in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Miami Herald, and the St. Petersburg Times.
