American Poet Magazine

American Poet

Launched in 1996, American Poet is the Academy's biannual journal. A year's subscription to the magazine is included in all levels of Academy membership. The publication's aim, like the aim of all Academy programs, is to provide a panorama of the contemporary poetic landscape.

The features in American Poet are written by some of today's most acclaimed and influential poets. The journal's many notable essays have included: Frank Bidart on Robert Lowell's revision process, Mark Doty on metaphor, Thylias Moss on poetry's limits, Rosemarie Waldrop on contemporary French poetry, and Susan Wheeler on poetic forms.

The Emerging Poet series has introduced more than a dozen promising cutting-edge poets, many of whom obtained publishing contracts shortly after appearing in American Poet.

Interviews have highlighted conversations with such luminaries as Eavan Boland, Rita Dove, Jorie Graham, Philip Levine, Stanley Kunitz, and Robert Pinsky. The Books Noted section gives readers a helpful perspective on the world of poetry publishing. And of course, each article -- be it a manifesto or a memorial -- is accompanied by remarkable poems.
