National Poetry Month 2013

Highlights from National Poetry Month 2013 included our launching the educational project Dear Poet, along with a series of lesson plans aligned with the Common Core to help teachers bring the project to their classrooms. We also produced a poster, designed by Jessica Helfand, featuring the line "Write about your sorrows, your wishes, your passing thoughts, your belief in anything beautiful" from Rainer Maria Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet, which was distributed to over 100,000 libraries and teachers.

Dear Poet Project

To celebrate the role correspondence has played in poets' development and writing lives—and inspired by Rainer Maria Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet, in which the poet replies to letters from a young military cadet and aspiring poet asking for his advice—we invited students to engage with poetry by reading poems from some of the poets who serve on our Board of Chancellors and handwriting letters to the poets in response to their poems.

We received hundreds of letters from students across the country, and our Chancellors wrote back. Take a look.
