An Evening of Poetry and Conversation with Jane Hirshfield and Dan Gerber

Fall Arts Celebration at Grand Valley State University invites you to a poetry reading and book signing that will spotlight two authentic poetic voices in Jane Hirshfield and Dan Gerber.

Jane Hirshfield has penned many collections of poetry and prose, including The Beauty, Come Thief, The Lives of the Heart, The October Palace, and Given Sugar, Given Salt. In fall 2004, she was awarded the 70th Academy Fellowship for distinguished poetic achievement by the Academy of American Poets, which is an honor formerly held by Robert Frost, Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams and Elizabeth Bishop.

Dan Gerber, a native of Fremont, is the author of a dozen books of poetry, fiction and essays. His most recent books of poems include Particles: New & Selected Poems and Sailing through Cassiopeia.

Broad-ribbed leaves of the calathea plant
trickle water down into the mouth of its pot
as if it's still fighting off competitors in the wild

as kittens scamper past, the knees of their 
hind legs bending backwards with inhuman
ease, like teenage boys leaping for rebounds
