National Poetry Month was inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996. Over the years, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world with schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers, and poets celebrating poetry’s vital place in our culture.

Launched in 2011, Northfield, Minnesota’s Sidewalk Poetry initiative showcases new poems by its residents on pedestrian walkways each year. The poems, selected from a contest judged by a panel of local artists and civic leaders, are published and broadcasted by KYMN Radio in April. And in May, weather permitting, poems will be imprinted on Northfield’s sidewalks.

The Kellog-Hubbard Library in Montpelier, Vermont, is bringing back PoemCity, a citywide celebration of National Poetry Month.
