Anyone who has ever received a rejection letter from a publisher can identify with Leon Barlow, the main character of Big Bad Love. He is a Vietnam veteran struggling to get his writing and personal life together. The film is based on the short stories of Mississippi writer Larry Brown, and his poetry and prose are woven throughout the film.
The movie includes a memorable scene of Barlow reading his poetry to best-friend Monroe (actor Paul Le Mat, who in real life happens to be a big fan of William Carlos Williams) as they race through the Southern night in a beat-up truck. The soundtrack is outstanding as well, with tracks by Tom Waits and Steve Earle.
