Maxine Kumin Dies at 88

New York, NY (February 7, 2014) —The Academy of American Poets was saddened to learn today of the passing of Maxine Kumin from her daughter Judith. The author of more than ten collections of poetry, Kumin, who won the Pulitzer Prize in poetry in 1974, died on February 6, 2014.

Kumin served as Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress and Poet Laureate of New Hampshire, and a member of the Academy's Board of Chancellors from 1995 to 1998. A noted feminist and activist, her advocacy contributed to the Academy today being led by the most diverse body of poets in its history.

Kumin received the Aiken Taylor Award for Modern Poetry, an American Academy of Arts and Letters award, the Sarah Joseph Hale Award, the Levinson Prize, a National Endowment for the Arts grant, the Eunice Tietjens Memorial Prize from Poetry, and fellowships from the Academy of American Poets, and the National Council on the Arts.
