This lovely (3" x 1.7") brooch is inset with lines from T. S. Eliot's "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock." It is varnished and lightweight and comfortable to wear.
Eliot is one of the key modernist poets of the twentieth century. It was in London that Eliot came under the influence of his contemporary Ezra Pound, who recognized his poetic genius at once, and assisted in the publication of his work in a number of magazines, most notably "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" in Poetry in 1915. His first book of poems, Prufrock and Other Observations, was published in 1917, and immediately established him as a leading poet of the avant-garde.
This piece uses the opening lines of "Prufrock":
Let us go then, you and I,
When the evening is spread out against the sky
Like a patient etherized upon a table;
Let us go, through certain half-deserted streets,
The muttering retreats
Of restless nights in one-night cheap hotels
And sawdust restaurants with oyster-shells:
Streets that follow like a tedious argument
Of insidious intent
To lead you to an overwhelming question...
Oh, do not ask, "What is it?"
Let us go and make our visit.
The perfect gift for a dedicated reader of T. S. Eliot or poetry in general, this limited-edition jewelry is hand-crafted by designer Tilly Bloom. If you love poetry, wear your heart on your sleeve with the "Anna Reads Eliot" brooch.
