1994. Introduced by David Lehman.
John Ashbery is the internationally renowned poet associated with "the New York School." His Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror won the 1976 Pulitzer Prize, National Book Critics Circle Award, and National Book Award.
The poems in this recording come from the poet's seventeenth collection of poetry, Can You Hear, Bird. Library Journal says of this Ashbery recording that "one listens to him reading much as one does to readings of Wallace Stevens--for the musicality, for the snatches of humor or twists of a phrase."
