1988/1992. Introduced by Brooks Haxton (1988) and Philip Levine (1992).

A poet who relished the nuances and sensuality of language, food, love, and jazz, the late William Matthews is captured here in two recordings, reading from several of his critically acclaimed books: Forseeable Futures, Blues if You Want, Selected Poems & Translations: 1969-1991 and Time & Money.

In his introduction to the 1992 reading, Philip Levine identifies the Matthews quote that defines this tape: "Listen now and you will hear 'the sweet ferocity of excellence.'"

Length: 68 min.
