1963. Introduced by Stanley Kunitz.

This reading, on Halloween night, inaugurated the Academy's reading series, and is thought to be the first public reading by Berryman of his Pulitzer Prize-winning Dream Songs. Lowell reads from Life Studies, for which he received the National Book Award.

"[Robert Lowell's] interesting rhythms combine rhetoric and personalism, and his grave voice adds an intriguing dimension to the acclaimed work. John Berryman's slow, slurring speech gives his poetic character, Henry, a proper spirit." —Booklist
