Come hear Natalie Merchant perform poetry-inspired songs at the Grand Opening of Poets House’s new home. This free event on the “front lawn” of the new 50,000-volume poetry library and literary center will also feature an abundance of renowned poets offering dynamic readings of verse inspired by the new space.
Starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, at Poets House at 10 River Terrace (at Murray Street) in Battery Park City, children and their families will enjoy the charismatic performance of Philadelphia poet and musician Kurt Lamkin, who will be playing the Kora, an African stringed instrument.
Poets House offers a variety of activities for poetry lovers of all ages. Formerly located in a cozy loft in SoHo, the newly constructed $8.7 million space on the ground floor and second floor of Ten River Terrace, is double the size (11,000 square feet) of the original and has sweeping views of the Hudson River, a spacious lobby with majestic double-height ceilings, a glass-walled exhibition space, an elegant Calder mobile, a programming hall that opens onto an outdoor courtyard, and a light-filled children’s room. The new Poets House is also eco-friendly, custom-designed to LEED gold standards, and was awarded its space rent free (by the Battery Park City Authority) until 2069.
Check out the interior of the new Poets House at the housewarming on Friday, September 25 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and at the open house on Saturday, September 26 from noon to 3 p.m.
