Called the oldest poetry prize in the country, the Golden Rose shaped like the gold rose given to the French Provencal poets who won the Jeux Fleureux in the Middle Ages in Europe, the Rose is given each year to the poet who has done the most for the art either in the preceding year or during his/her lifetime. After the presentation the poet traditionally gives the reading. Some of the poets who have received the Rose include Robert Lowell, Robert Frost, May Sarton, Adrienne Rich, James Merrill, Galway Kinnell, Lawrence Ferlinghetti
