The Bowery Poetry Club's World of Poetry and City Lore present Poetry from the Rooftop of the World--a reading by poet Yuyutsu R. D. Sharma from Nepal! Sharma reads from his work in English and Nepali accompanied by Himalayan musicians. Prior to the reading, Sharma will lead a workshop, Making of a Himalayan Poem, sketching the history of Nepali literature, creative life of a Himalayan poem, its folk and classic forms, and fast changing content in light of the recent political upheavals. He will especially discuss his movement of Content Metamorphosis and survey of the emerging trends in the Nepalese literature in the south Asian context.
Sharma's poetry is inspired by the Himalayas and uses as landscape and traditions of various ranges, including the Annapurna, Everest, and Helambu. The Himalayas is a large chain of snow ranges stretching Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bhutan, Nepal, China, and Myanmar. His work also depicts episodes from his life in Himalayas and travels, particularly how he bridges the life from the mountains in the encounters in the western world, especially urban Europe.
Yuyutsu R. D. Sharma is a distinguished poet and translator and a recipient of fellowships and grants from The Rockefeller Foundation, Ireland Literature Exchange, The Institute for the Translation of Hebrew Literature, and The Foundation for the Production and Translation of Dutch Literature.
