Women’s History Poetry Reading Celebrates 15 Years
The 15th Annual Women’s History Poetry Reading will be held on April 14, 2013 at the Baton Rouge Gallery. This long-standing event is a part of the gallery’s “Sunday’s@4” series. “Fifteen years! This is a great tradition.” said coordinator, Les Ann Kirkland “Poets and poetry lovers wait all year for this event. It’s rejuvenating, like Christmas for the psyche.” Original poems lasting 3 to 4 minutes about women, history or both will be read by a wide range of Louisiana women, from published poets to first time readers. “Each woman sends out her gift from the microphone. One poem is so different from the next so there’s always something for everyone.”
The event was founded in 1998 by Sue Owen, then poet-in-residence at LSU, and is held either in March, Women’s History Month, or April, National Poetry Month.
Early confirmers include Marilyn Burel, Sylvia Green Chatman, Dorothy Davis, Liz Ferguson, Beth Foos, Holley Galland Haymaker, Ava Leavell Haymon, Brandon Elizabeth Hebert, Mary Hudson, Sarah W.
