The Poetics of Kitsch
Featured Poets:Daniel Tiffany, Sianne Ngai, Joyelle McSweeney, Johannes Goransson
October 20, 2012, 3 p.m.
Poets House, 10 River Terrace, New York, NY
$10 general admission, $7 students/seniors, free for members
Kitsch is a way of describing certain kinds of treasured (and trivial) objects in material culture, right? Most people don't know that poetry has a forgotten, but crucial role in the muddled history of kitsch. And poetic kitsch reaches from the eighteenth century--the golden age of literary hanky-panky--to current revisions of the New York School poets. Our panel of poets and theorists will sample the history of poetic forgery, melodrama, pet epitaphs, queer idylls, fortune cookies, and the mysteries of Swedish translation. Come and argue with our genealogy of poetry and kitsch--and decide for yourself whether poetic kitsch is still the antithesis of the avant-garde or the leading edge of artistic experiment!
