Poetry Slam? Or Slam Poetry?
Featured Poets:Mahogany L. Browne, Taylor Mali, James Merenda, Jeanann Verlee
October 10, 2012, 7 p.m.
Poets House, 10 River Terrace, New York, NY
$10 general admission, $7 students/seniors, free for members
The poetry slam is a competitive poetry reading judged by randomly selected members of the audience. The art form started in Chicago in the mid 1980s and is now a world-wide phenomenon. Although not the birthplace of slam, New York City has always been a major player in the world of performance poetry, and teams from New York have won the National Poetry Slam many times. Taylor Mali, one of the most well known poets to have emerged from the poetry slam movement, and representatives from three of the city's most prominent poetry slam series will hold a discussion/demonstration of the poetry slam and what makes a poem not only "come alive" in performance but also score well with judges who may or may not know anything about poetry.
