Based in Baltimore, CityLit aims to increase public appreciation for literature, to build a community of writers, and to enhance the ability of local and area writers to create literature and reach larger audiences. The Project sponsors an annual literary festival and frequent workshops. The CityLit Press publishes authors who are often overlooked by larger publishing companies, giving voice to smaller-scale writers around the country; it sponsors a poetry chapbook competition each year.
