  1. How can I search on Poets.org? Simply enter one or more terms into the search box that you would like to find on the site. Poets.org will produce a results page that lists all the places your search term appear.

  2. How can I limit my search? By default, Poets.org will only return pages that include all of your search terms so there is no need to use "and" between terms. Use "or" between terms to search for the appearance of either word.

  3. Does capitalization matter? Yes. If you type your search term in either all lowercase or all uppercase then the search will be case insensitive and will return all the pages where the term appears, regardless of capitalization. However, if you enter a term with mixed capitalization then the search will be case sensitive and will only return an exact match.

  4. Can I search for parts of words? Yes, you can search for words that begin with your search term. For instance, searching for "eli" will bring up pages for Elizabeth Bishop, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and T. S. Eliot—but not Cornelius Eady.

  5. Can you help me find a poem or author? We are very sorry, but due to the enormous volume of e-mail we receive, we are unable to help visitors search for poems. If you cannot find what you are looking for by using the advanced search on our site, you can use a common search engine to research. We recommend Google.com. Try entering a line from the poem or the title in quotation marks; this makes the search engine look for the words in that particular order rather than anywhere in a document, making your search results smaller and more concise. You can also try posting your request in the "Find a Poem" section of our Discussion Forum. If that doesn't work, it can be quite difficult to find a poem without a title or the name of the poet. Your local library may have specific resources to assist you.
