The Eric Mathieu King Fund was established in 1995 to support the
publication of poetry books in the United States. As of November 1999, the Fund
is suspended indefinitely.
The Eric Mathieu King Fund provided grants of up to $3,000 to support
the publication of individual volumes of poetry at non-commercial presses.
Eligible projects included collections of original poetry, reprints of classic
works of American poetry or poetry criticism, poetry anthologies, and
translations of poetry from any language into English. First books of poetry
were not eligible for these grants, as such projects were covered by the
Greenwall Fund.
The Eric Mathieu King Fund was part of the Atlas Fund, an umbrella fund
established by the Academy in 1994 to provide financial assistance to
publishers of poetry. The Fund was named for Eric Mathieu King, a successful
businessman and supporter of the arts who believed that poetry has an
indispensable role to play in society as a direct, intimate means of
communication. Eric Mathieu King died on January 30, 1990, in a skiing accident
in the Canadian Rockies.
