The Edgar Allan Poe Award was established in 1974 by The Copernicus
Society of America and administered by the Academy. The $5,000 award
was given to a living American poet 45 or under, in recognition of the
poet's continuing development of his art, and in honor of a newly
published volume of the winner's poetry.
